VTTI - Global operations, global email, global solution
VTTI is a truly global company. Operating a network of bulk logistics in 11 countries, across 5 continents, they load and discharge more than 6,000 vessels a year, serving the energy industry in linking oil flows. Currently handling more than 6 million m3 the company is continuing to expand, and by 2012 that figure will increase to over 8 million m3.
VTTI manage staff, covering 25 different nationalities, across the world to facilitate this—and as with any logistics organisation, communication is key to its success. Also, like many other global organisations, compliance is crucial— and in mobile communications that means unhackable security of the mobile device.
As technology advances, as well as corporate-supplied mobiles most people have a personal mobile device, such as iPhones, Androids and iPads—but for them to use this for work purposes brings risk of exposure to non-compliance to their employer.
"Traditionally the company has supplied key staff with mobile phones," said Stuart Garland, IT Director at VTTI, "but more and more people want to choose and use their own smart phone or iPad for business as well as personal use so they don't need to carry around more than one device. Unfortunately this gave us a headache because of its resultant exposure to compliance issues." He went on to say, "Using Active Sync on personal devices is far from ideal. If an individual were to input the password incorrectly three times (easily done in a home environment where children often share use of the mobile phone or iPad) the whole device is wiped and all data, both professional and personal, is lost."
"We looked into the alternatives, and kl found us the perfect solution, Good for Enterprise. Good provides a solution that encrypts all messaging and web traffic from end-to-end to military and governmental requirements. This level of security and compliance means that we are now able to install this across the board." Stuart explained, "Good allows the user to effectively divide their mobile device—access to business information is protected but the system doesn't interfere with their personal use. There is no degeneration to the user experience at all, the system is easy to use and allows instant, secure mobile access to data, applications and services. It couldn't be simpler."
